Starting from the 1st of September, we are launching our brand new ‘Nutritionist Approved’ nursery menu with Nursery Kitchen! This means that our new menu demonstrates a standard of excellence in food provision which works to support children’s future health outcomes, and aims to promote healthy relationships with food. These standards go above and beyond the national recommended guidelines for food and drink provision in early years settings.
With the acredited menu, we can guarantee every day provides varied meals that ensure our children receive up to 90% of their daily nutrition whilst at kinderzimmer! Our new menu exceeds national guidance (Eat Better Start Better) and has been created by early years nutrition experts to provide the right balance of nutrients, variety, and taste.
Below are a few FAQs to help you find all the information you're looking for:
A Nursery Chef works on-site to prepare food daily. While this can work well, it can also be disrupted by staff absence, requiring the nursery team to cover, which takes their focus away from the children.
Nursery Kitchen, on the other hand, has a dedicated team of early years nutrition experts, allergen specialists, and trained chefs who prepare meals off-site in a controlled environment. This ensures:
• Consistent quality and safety
• No disruption due to staff absence
• Menus designed specifically for children’s nutritional needs
These specialists create meals specifically for young children. Unlike having an on-site chef, this approach means we never face meal disruption due to staff absence, children consistently enjoy safe, healthy, and tasty food every day.
1. Menu planning - Led by nutritionists who specialise in early years diets.
2. Recipe development - Designed to meet and exceed Eat Better, Start Better guidance.
3. Fresh preparation - All meals are handmade using fresh, high-quality ingredients.
4. Quick-chilling - Preserves nutrients, flavour, and texture without using preservatives.
5. Delivery - Meals are sent to us chilled, ready to be reheated and served safely.
We’ve been serving Nursery Kitchen meals since day one at kinderzimmer, and our children absolutely love them! The new menu builds on that success, carefully designed to tackle common nutritional gaps in early years diets (like too much sugar and saturated fat, and not enough fibre or oily fish).
Our menu is independently approved by nutritionists and is based on extensive research into children’s dietary needs. We go above and beyond national early years guidance, focusing on reducing sugar and saturated fats while increasing fibre, fruit, vegetables, and oily fish. Every recipe is designed to support healthy growth and lifelong eating habits.
Highlights include:
• Beans and pulses for extra fibre and plant-based protein
• Oily fish once a week for omega-3s
• A meat-free day for variety and sustainability
• Creative plant-based dishes with both visible and hidden vegetables
• 20 different vegetables and 11 fruits rotated regularly
• A variety of protein sources
• Low salt and low sugar recipes
• High-welfare meat, free-range eggs, UK Red Tractor-certified meat, and MSC-approved fish
Our menu is created in line with, and in many ways exceeds, the Eat Better, Start Better guidance for early years settings. Parents can be confident their child is getting the best possible balance of nutrients.
We share our seasonal menus with parents, so you’ll always know what’s on offer each day. We can also let you know what your child particularly enjoyed at mealtimes, so you can talk about it together at home.
We also add this on our kinderzimmer app so you will receive updates throughout the day on what your child has eaten, and how much.
Absolutely. Nursery Kitchen caters for a wide range of dietary requirements, including allergies, intolerances, and cultural or religious preferences. All meals are prepared with strict allergen control procedures in place, so your child can enjoy safe, nutritious food that meets their individual needs. Please get in touch with us if you'd like to discuss a specific dietary requirement.
Our new menu launches today and we can't wait to see what our food critics (the children) think!
