In today’s world, the importance of mental health is becoming increasingly recognised, and this extends to children in their early years. At kinderzimmer, we believe that supporting a child’s mental health is just as important as nurturing their physical and cognitive development. A child’s emotional well-being plays a significant role in shaping how they engage with others, manage challenges, and approach learning.
We understand that early experiences lay the foundation for lifelong emotional health. That’s why we take a proactive and thoughtful approach to supporting each child’s mental and emotional well-being. In this blog, we’ll share how we foster a positive mental health environment for children, and how parents and educators can work together to promote emotional resilience in young children.
A safe and nurturing environment is essential for children to feel secure and emotionally supported. At kinderzimmer, we strive to create a welcoming atmosphere where children can express their feelings freely and develop positive relationships with their peers and educators.
Familiar Routines: We maintain consistent daily routines, which help children feel secure and develop a sense of predictability. Familiar routines also provide children with the confidence to explore and take on new challenges.
Safe Spaces: We offer designated quiet areas in our nursery, where children can retreat when they feel overwhelmed or need some time alone. These calm zones help children regulate their emotions and learn how to manage stress in a supportive setting.
We encourage open communication at all times, ensuring that children feel heard and understood. Whether a child is struggling with frustration, or is feeling proud of an achievement, we provide opportunities for them to express themselves and talk about their emotions.
Emotion Coaching: Our educators use simple language to help children identify and label their feelings. We talk openly about emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement, helping children recognise and understand their own emotions and those of others
Emotional Literacy: at nursery, we regularly read books that explore children's feelings and emotions as part of our commitment to supporting mental health. Stories that name and explain emotions like sadness, anger, happiness, and worry help children to recognise and talk about how they feel. These shared reading experiences spark valuable conversations, allowing children to make sense of their emotions in a safe and nurturing environment. Over time, they begin to build emotional vocabulary and develop empathy, which supports their overall wellbeing.
Circle Time: Regular group discussions during circle time allow children to share their thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment. This not only boosts their confidence but also fosters empathy and connection with their peers.
Creative Expression and Nature Walks: Art is another powerful tool we use to support children's mental health. Whether they’re painting freely, exploring texture with clay, or making marks with chalk, creative activities allow children to express themselves in ways that words sometimes can't. Alongside this, we take regular nature walks, which give children time to relax, breathe fresh air, and connect with the natural world. These quiet, unhurried moments in green spaces help to reduce stress and support emotional regulation, giving children a calm foundation to return to throughout the day
Children’s mental health is closely tied to their social experiences and relationships. At our nursery, we place great emphasis on building positive relationships between children and educators, as well as among the children themselves.
Warm, Caring Educators: Our team of educators builds trusting, secure relationships with each child, offering them reassurance, guidance, and encouragement. By creating strong bonds, we help children feel safe and supported, which promotes emotional well-being.
Social Play: We encourage social play that allows children to learn important skills like cooperation, sharing, and empathy. These interactions help children develop healthy relationships and improve their emotional resilience.
Developing emotional resilience - the ability to cope with life’s ups and downs - is an important part of a child’s mental health. At our nursery, we actively teach children how to manage their emotions and build resilience.
Mindfulness Activities: Simple mindfulness exercises like our breathe and balance activities, such as deep breathing, circle time conversations about understanding feelings and being able to name the feelings to how our body feels are consistently threaded into our daily routines. These techniques help children manage feelings of frustration, anxiety, or overstimulation. At kinderzimmer we provide emotion coaching to children daily.
Problem-Solving: We encourage children to solve small conflicts or challenges on their own, with gentle guidance from educators. This helps them build self-confidence, independence, and the ability to handle difficult situations constructively. When children learn to overcome small challenges, that pride builds into confidence of trying to overcome larger challenges. We promote a mindset that the trying is the most important thing, to keep on trying and that it is ok to fail. Our nurseries have many resources that provide problem solving learning opportunities and our team are trained to provide guidance and support in a child's routine to promote independence in these moments. If Educators or parents swoop in all the time, it makes a child feel as there is no trust in their ability.
We believe that supporting children’s mental health is a collaborative effort between the nursery and home. Our team is dedicated to partnering with parents and caregivers to provide continuity and consistency in emotional support.
Regular Communication: We keep parents informed about their child’s emotional development and any behavioural changes we may observe. By sharing insights and strategies, we help families provide the best support for their child’s mental well-being at home.
Workshops and Resources: We offer workshops and resources for parents on topics related to children’s mental health, such as managing anxiety, fostering resilience, and supporting emotional regulation at home.
Supporting children’s mental health during the early years sets the stage for their future emotional well-being. At kinderzimmer, we prioritise creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can develop strong emotional foundations, learn to manage their feelings, and build positive relationships. By working closely with parents and educators, we ensure that every child has the emotional tools they need to thrive. Together, we can create a strong, kind and resilient generation.
