What to Look Out for When Choosing Your Child’s Nursery: A Guide for Parents

Choosing the right nursery for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in their early years. The right environment can set the stage for a positive educational experience, fostering their development and helping them grow into confident, happy individuals. But with so many options available, how do you know which nursery is the best fit for your child? In this guide, we’ll explore the key factors to consider when selecting a nursery, ensuring that you make an informed decision that meets your child’s needs.

1. Location and Accessibility

The nursery’s location is a practical consideration that can greatly impact your daily routine. Look for a nursery that is conveniently located near your home or workplace. This will make drop-offs and pick-ups easier and reduce the stress of commuting.

Transport Links: Consider the accessibility of the nursery by public transport if needed, and check for safe walking routes or parking facilities if needed.

Open and close time: Does the nurseries open and close times meet your family needs? Make sure to check if they close for training days, bank holidays or special events.

Please click ‘Location’ on the website header and select your preferred location to check the transport links and see the location of your local kinderzimmer Day Nursery. All kinderzimmer Day Nurseries are open from 7:30-18:30 Monday to Friday except bank holidays and a week between Christmas and New Year. We also hold 3 yearly staff training days where the nursery will be closed, but parents are made aware of these dates far in advance.

2. Ofsted Rating and Reputation

In the UK, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) provides ratings for nurseries, which can be a helpful indicator of quality.

Ofsted Reports: Review the nursery’s latest Ofsted report online to get an understanding of its strengths and areas for improvement. A ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ rating is a positive sign. Make sure to read these reports (and not just the rating) as they are a great source of information about the nursery. Many nurseries are exceptional but may have been awarded a ‘Good ‘rating a few years before.

Word of Mouth: Talk to other parents in your community to gather feedback. Personal recommendations can provide valuable insights that go beyond official ratings. We recommend this being your biggest source of opinion on a nursery. Speak to parents who currently attend, they will have the best and most recent insight into the nursery.

3. Environment and Facilities

The nursery environment plays a crucial role in your child’s comfort and learning. When visiting potential nurseries, pay close attention to the facilities and overall atmosphere.

Safety and Cleanliness: Ensure that the nursery is clean, well-maintained, and safe. Look for secure entrances, well-kept learning areas, and age-appropriate toys and equipment. Check if you are happy with the sleep areas, dining areas and changing areas as these are important spaces for your children daily.

Indoor and Outdoor Spaces: A good nursery will have a balance of indoor and outdoor spaces. Having both opportunities of indoor and outdoor learning spaces provides a holistic learning environment for all children's learning needs.

Learning Resources: Check for a variety of learning materials that cater to different interests and developmental stages. Ask the nursery about how their resources teach your child and help with the development of their learning.

Atmosphere: Is the environment calm, nurturing, and welcoming? Observe how the children interact with the room, resources and team. Is the environment loud, messy and disorganized or is it well resourced, set up to invite children into play with spaces of quiet and calm to relax in? Current research shows that having environments with calming colours on the walls and resources that are low level and accessible is the foundation for creating an enabling environment for children.

At kinderzimmer all of our nurseries include well thought out, purposefully designed educational indoor and outdoor learning environments, designed by team members who are highly qualified and specifically trained in child development and enabling educational environments. Alongside this we provide high-end resources to support your child's needs across a rich curriculum. We also hire housekeepers for our nurseries to ensure the cleanliness of our sites, this way our educators concentrate on the children and their environment whilst the housekeepers support the team in keeping the environment clean and tidy for the children.

4. Curriculum and Policies

Different nurseries follow different educational philosophies and curriculums. It’s important to choose one that aligns with your values and expectations for your child’s early learning.

Curriculum: Ask about the nursery’s curriculum and how it supports your child’s development across key areas such as communication, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development.

Implementation: Does the nursery include and partner with parents on the child’s learning journey? Research shows that nurseries that have effective partnership with parents provide better outcomes for children.

Policies: Ask the nursery about their policies, make sure their policies meet your requirements and needs. The policies are the foundation that the nursery runs from so make sure you are happy with theirs. Look at behaviour management, safe sleep, medicine and administration, sickness and exclusion, meal times etc. Make sure these align to your family and child's needs.

5. Staff Qualifications and Ratios

The quality of the staff is one of the most important factors in determining the overall experience for your child.

Qualifications: Ensure that the nursery staff are well-qualified and experienced in early childhood education. In the UK, at least one member of staff should hold a Level 3 qualification, and half of the rest should have a Level 2 qualification.

Staff Ratios: Check the adult-to-child ratios, as these can affect the level of individual attention your child receives. For children under two, there should be one staff member for every three children. For children aged two, there should be at least one staff member for every five children; for children aged three and over, the ratio should be one to eight or better.

Interactions: Are the staff welcoming and friendly to yourself and the children? Look for the type of interactions you see with the children, visitors and parents. Make sure that you get the impression that your child will be nurtured, cared for and educated in the setting. Do the team in the room and the leadership team show these qualities?

At kinderzimmer we take great pride in our team. Our team is not only highly qualified, with extensive training in early years education, but they’re also incredibly kind and passionate about nurturing young minds. We follow a key person approach, ensuring each child builds a close bond with a dedicated staff member who understands their individual needs and interests. We’re committed to continuous professional development (CPD), so our educators remain experts in child development, equipped with the latest strategies to support each child’s learning journey. Our team members engage in regular peer-on-peer observations, which encourage constant growth and reflection, ensuring our staff are always supported and working towards becoming the best educators they can be for every child in our care.

6. Nutrition and Meal Times

A healthy diet is crucial for your child’s growth and development. Ask about the nursery’s approach to meals and snacks.

Meal Quality: Inquire about the quality and variety of the food provided. Fresh, balanced meals that include plenty of fruits and vegetables are ideal.

Dietary Requirements: Ensure that the nursery can accommodate any specific dietary needs your child may have, whether due to allergies, intolerances, or cultural preferences.

Mealtime Environment: Look for a nursery that encourages social interaction during meals and promotes good eating habits. Are children rushed through meals or is it used as important moment to teach children and educators eat and role model with the children.

7. Communication and Parental Involvement

Open and regular communication between the nursery and parents is essential for tracking your child’s progress and addressing any concerns.

Updates: Ask how the nursery communicates with parents - whether through daily reports, regular meetings, or digital apps. Consistent updates on your child’s activities and development are important.

Parental Involvement: Find out how involved you can be in your childs learning journey. A good nursery will actively seek parent participation and feedback.

We have our own kinderzimmer app which is essentially a dedicated news feed of everything your child has been up to throughout the day, this covers core areas of their daily routine such as meals, bathroom use and sleep. Alongside this it includes photos and observations of what your child has enjoyed and learnt that day.

Effective parent partnerships are at the heart of our approach to each child's learning and development. We believe that by building a strong, open relationship with parents, we can better understand each child's unique needs, interests, and experiences, helping us tailor a learning journey that truly supports their growth. Our key person system ensures that each child has a dedicated educator who forms a bond with them and keeps parents regularly informed through conversations, observations, and progress updates. We actively involve parents in assessment and planning, sharing insights into their child’s achievements and discussing goals, both big and small, to foster development at home and at nursery.

Our key persons use ongoing assessments to track each child's progress, identifying strengths and areas for growth, and together with parents, we create individual plans to guide and support the child’s learning journey. Through this partnership, we create a supportive environment where each child’s development is nurtured in harmony with their family’s insights and aspirations.

Conclusion

Choosing the right nursery for your child requires careful consideration of several factors, from location and Ofsted ratings to staff qualifications and communication practices and a nurturing team. By focusing on these key areas, you can find a nursery that not only meets your practical needs but also provides a nurturing, stimulating environment where your child can thrive. Remember, the best nursery for your child is one that feels right for both you and your child, ensuring they are happy, safe, and excited to learn.
